Winter Robin in Coloured Pencil with Rachel Derbyshire

  • Unit 6 King Street Workshops Harrogate, England, HG3 5LE United Kingdom (map)

A Full-Day Pet Portrait Workshop

Spend a day creating a beautiful coloured-pencil portrait of a pet you love.

Whether it's a much-loved dog or cat, a horse, rabbit or another special companion, this relaxed full-day workshop will guide you through the process of turning your favourite photograph into your very own pet portrait.

Working from a photograph of your own pet, I'll take you step by step through my coloured-pencil process. We'll look at choosing and layering colours, creating realistic fur and markings, capturing those all-important eyes and features, and gradually building depth, texture and character into your drawing.

Unlike my shorter workshops, this full-day session gives us the luxury of slowing things down and really getting stuck into your portrait. You'll have plenty of individual guidance throughout the day, particularly when it comes to tackling the unique colours, markings and textures of your own animal.

Before the workshop, you'll be asked to send me a selection of photographs of the pet you'd like to draw. I'll help you choose the most suitable reference image so that you're ready to get started on the day.

You don't need to be an experienced artist to join us. I'll demonstrate techniques throughout the workshop and guide you through each stage, so enthusiastic beginners are very welcome.

All drawing materials are provided, along with plenty of tea, coffee and homemade cake. Please bring a packed lunch with you.

You'll leave with your own unique coloured-pencil pet portrait – and, most importantly, the skills and confidence to continue developing it at home if you'd like to add even more detail.
